Thriving in Our Later Years

ree

Sometimes life reinforces its messages through perfectly timed moments.

Earlier this week, I ran into a woman I used to volunteer with. She’s in her 70s, and when I mentioned that we started a business to support older adults and their families through the complexities of aging, she immediately asked to join our monthly newsletter. When I asked what kind of guidance would be most helpful to her, she didn’t hesitate: “Thriving in the later years.”

The next day, I was invited to contribute to an article about loneliness in older adults. I shared something I think often gets missed: there’s a big difference between being alone and feeling lonely. Being alone is simply a physical state. Many people, especially introverts, find it restful and restorative. Loneliness is an emotional experience that comes from craving connection but not having it. You can be surrounded by others and still feel lonely, or spend time alone and feel completely at peace.

That distinction matters. It reminds us not to make assumptions based on appearances, and it invites us to notice and respond to signs of deeper need.

Connection can take many forms. Joining a group activity, chatting with a cashier, or sending a quick message to someone can make a real difference. Small engagements can have a lasting impact.

In fact, this post was inspired by two unexpected gestures: a phone call from a friend I’ve known since middle school, now living 3,000 miles away, and a text from a newer friend I hadn’t seen in months: “You are on my brain and heart. Just saying hi.”

So here’s a small challenge: take five seconds right now to text someone, whether they’re a senior or not, and let them know you’re thinking of them. A tiny gesture can brighten someone’s entire day.

And if you’re curious, for yourself or someone you love, about how to navigate aging with more clarity, connection, and meaning, we’d love to have you join our 'Next Step' Silver Path monthly newsletter.
